{"id":10290,"date":"2018-08-06T22:16:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T22:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=10290"},"modified":"2018-08-06T22:30:42","modified_gmt":"2018-08-06T22:30:42","slug":"nana-addo-sacks-energy-minister-boakye-agyarko","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/?p=10290","title":{"rendered":"Nana Addo sacks Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">President Akufo-Addo has sacked the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from the Communications Directorate of the Presidency copied to kumasionlinegh.com on Monday said Mr. Agyarko\u2019s firing \u201ctakes immediate effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement said Mr. Agyarko has been directed to \u201chand over his office to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. John Peter Amewu, who will act temporarily as Minister for Energy, until a substantive appointment is made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President wishes Mr. Boakye Agyarko well in his future endeavors,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The statement failed to give reasons for his dismissal, but reports indicate that it is related to the renegotiated Ameri deal which alarmed many, including the Minority, who described it as a \u201cstinky\u201d deal for Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>The government has reportedly withdrawn the deal following the uproar.<\/p>\n<p>The Akufo-Addo government took the revised deal to Parliament last week under a certificate of urgency, but the House deferred its deliberation on the contract due to concerns\u00a0over the cost and value for money.<\/p>\n<p>The new agreement was to extend the current five-year deal with Ameri Energy which is currently operating a 300MW emergency power plant in Ghana to 15 years and bring onboard a new company from Greece, Mytilineous International Trading Company, to manage the plant for the period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Akufo-Addo was misled\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pro-NPP newspaper, Daily Statesman last week reported that the Energy Ministry\u2019s solo-driven revised deal with the Dubai-based energy equipment provider AMERI would not see the light of day.<\/p>\n<p>According to the newspaper, President Akufo-Addo was reportedly \u201cmisled\u201d into granting executive approval for the deal to be rushed through Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the proposal, the Greece-based Mytilineos International Trading Company was to assume management responsibility for the AMERI emergency power-generation arrangement negotiated by the past NDC government, in effect extending the original outsourcing agreement by ten years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn his return to Accra on Tuesday from the 53rd session of the ECOWAS Heads of State meeting in Togo, the President quickly requested and received a further briefing on the new deal. This revealed that the agreement to which he had approved on July 31 lacked the requisite input from the Attorney General and the Ministry of Finance. The President had been misled to believe that both departments had assessed the deal thoroughly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the Statesman newspaper did not name names, some believe that the President held the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko responsible for \u201cmisleading him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The John Mahama administration in 2015 signed a contract with Africa and Middle East Resources Investment Group (AMERI) Energy, to rent the 300MW of emergency power from AMERI.<\/p>\n<p>This was at the peak of the country\u2019s power crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The power agreement with UAE-based AMERI Energy cost $510 million.<\/p>\n<p>But according to the Akufo-Addo administration, it found out that AMERI had shortchanged the government as they presented an overpriced budget, and were overpaid by $150 million.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new agreement,\u00a0 Mytilineous International Trading Company will take over the management of the AMERI power plant for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>The new company has offered to pay AMERI an amount of $52,160,560, with the government paying the remaining $39 million to the Dubai-based AMERI Energy to wash its hands off the deal entirely.<\/p>\n<p>The new deal which was sent to Parliament under a certificate of urgency was withdrawn after Ghanaians raised concerns about the cost.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-428669\" src=\"https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Boakye-Agyarko-1024x682.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Boakye-Agyarko-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Boakye-Agyarko-1024x682-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Boakye-Agyarko-1024x682-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Boakye-Agyarko-1024x682-765x510.jpg 765w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bribery?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Boakye Agyarko has been named in a scandal in his time at the Energy Ministry. In 2017, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, alleged that the then Energy Minister nominee Agyarko had given members of Parliament\u2019s appointments committee GH\u00a2 3,000 each to unanimously approve him after his vetting.<\/p>\n<p>The allegation which was backed by the Member of Parliament North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, led to a probe by a special committee set up by Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The committee, which was headed by MP for Essikado-Ketan, Joe Ghartey, ruled that Mahama Ayariga\u2019s claims were baseless, and he was subsequently ordered to apologize, which he did, although reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-428670\" src=\"https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/AGYARKO.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/AGYARKO.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/AGYARKO-300x216.jpeg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"461\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Tireless\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his State of the Nation Address before Parliament in February, this year, President Nana Akufo-Addo singled out Boakye Agyarko for praise, describing him as tireless for his efforts at the Energy Ministry which the President said were crucial in ensuring stable power supply across the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am sure that the House shares my relief that dumsor is no longer part of our everyday lexicon.
