Manager Jose Mourinho retains the full backing of Manchester United\u2019s board despite Sunday\u2019s 3-2 Premier League defeat at Brighton.<\/p>\n
The result and performance has attracted widespread criticism.<\/p>\n
Mourinho is the favourite to be the next Premier League boss to leave his job, with suggestions that former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane is being considered as a potential replacement.<\/p>\n
A United source said: \u201cWhy would we discuss Zidane when there is no job?\u201d<\/p>\n
Mourinho was disappointed by the failure to make more outfield signings during the summer transfer window beyond Brazil midfielder Fred and teenage full-back Diogo Dalot, who is injured.<\/p>\n
He wanted additional cover in central defence and an alternative to Anthony Martial out wide.<\/p>\n
However, in both instances, the United board felt there was no worthwhile signing available.<\/p>\n
\u2018Blood in the water\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright says there is \u201cblood in the water\u201d at Old Trafford amid apparent discord behind the scenes.<\/p>\n Mourinho said United made \u201cincredible mistakes\u201d as they were beaten by Brighton.<\/p>\n Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live\u2019s Monday Night Club, Wright said: \u201cEd Woodward\u2019s unhappy, the manager\u2019s unhappy, the players are unhappy and the fans are.\u201d<\/p>\n Mourinho warned in the summer that his side faced \u201ca difficult season\u201d if they did not strengthen before the transfer window closed.<\/p>\n He had highlighted his team\u2019s defence as an area that needed bolstering, but deadline day passed without any new arrivals.<\/p>\n Former Arsenal striker Wright said he feared for the future of Mourinho, who signed a\u00a0contract extension until 2020 in January.<\/p>\n \u201cSomething is going to have to give somewhere along the line,\u201d Wright added.<\/p>\n \u201cIf it carries on like this for Manchester United, I don\u2019t care how much money they are making, they are going to slip way out of it.<\/p>\n \u201cI cannot see any other outcome than unfortunately Jose Mourinho will probably lose his job if it carries on like it is.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018There are big splits at Man Utd\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Former Chelsea forward Chris Sutton, speaking on the same programme, said Sunday\u2019s display suggested United\u2019s players \u201cwere not playing for their manager\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are big splits. They don\u2019t seem committed to the manager or the cause,\u201d added Sutton.<\/p>\n \u201cThey are Manchester United in name only. The worst thing is it didn\u2019t seem like a one-off yesterday, and it could happen time and time again.<\/p>\n \u201cThe fans are angry and fed up.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018Man Utd should have backed Mourinho\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n United were linked with several defenders during the close season, including Leicester\u2019s Harry Maguire, Tottenham\u2019s Toby Alderweireld and Bayern Munich\u2019s Jerome Boateng.<\/p>\n Speaking on Sky Sports\u2019 Monday Night Football, former United defender Gary Neville said the club should have supported Mourinho in the transfer window.<\/p>\n Neville added: \u201cThe minute that he [Woodward] gave Jose Mourinho a contract extension \u2013 which some would say was unnecessary part way through a season \u2013 but believing in a manager, showing the faith, he had to then buy him the centre-backs.<\/p>\n \u201cIrrespective of the manager, Manchester United need new centre-backs.<\/p>\n \u201cMy view is that Maguire and Alderweireld would have been good options. If they cost \u00a3120m to bring them in, then that\u2019s what you have to do.<\/p>\n \u201cMy view would be that he\u2019s got to stay until the very end of that contract and be backed until the end of that contract if you\u2019re going to give a contract extension as the CEO of the club.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the moment, there is definitely an angst there between the club and the manager.<\/p>\n \u201cDon\u2019t get me wrong \u2013 the club has supported him.
