Scott Morrison is to be Australia\u2019s new prime minister after Malcolm Turnbull was forced out by party rivals in a bruising leadership contest.<\/p>\n
Mr Turnbull had been under pressure from poor polling and what he described as an \u201cinsurgency\u201d by conservative MPs.<\/p>\n
Mr Morrison, the treasurer, won an internal ballot 45-40 over former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton \u2013 who had been Mr Turnbull\u2019s most vocal threat.<\/p>\n
Mr Turnbull is the fourth Australian PM in a decade to be ousted by colleagues.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been such a privilege to be the leader of this great nation. I love Australia. I love Australians,\u201d he said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Why was Turnbull forced out?<\/strong><\/p>\n With an election looming, MPs were nervous about the government\u2019s poor opinion polling and recent by-election defeats.<\/p>\n Last week,\u00a0a row over energy policy\u00a0ignited long-existing tensions between Mr Turnbull, a moderate, and his party\u2019s conservative wing.<\/p>\n Mr Dutton, a conservative, then unsuccessfully challenged Mr Turnbull\u00a0on Tuesday, but his narrow defeat only stoked further discord.<\/p>\n Mr Morrison entered the race after Mr Turnbull lost key backers.
