Pope Francis has begged forgiveness for members of the Catholic Church\u2019s hierarchy who \u201ckept quiet\u201d about clerical child sex abuse.<\/p>\n
He is ending a two-day visit to the Republic of Ireland by celebrating a Mass at Dublin\u2019s Phoenix Park.<\/p>\n
The Argentine Pope asked forgiveness for the \u201cabuses in Ireland, abuses of power, conscience and sexual abuses\u201d perpetrated by Church leaders.<\/p>\n
It is the first papal visit to Ireland for 39 years.<\/p>\n
Earlier he said no-one could fail to be moved by stories of those who \u201csuffered abuse, were robbed of their innocence and left scarred by painful memories\u201d, and reiterated his wish to see justice served.<\/p>\n
Huge crowds have flocked to Phoenix Park for the Mass to close the World Meeting of Families,\u00a0a global Catholic gathering that is held every three years.<\/p>\n
Pope Francis has used the penitential rite of the Mass to list a litany of different types of abuse and mistreatment inflicted on Irish people by Church figures, and the cover-ups of sex crimes.<\/p>\n
On each occasion he asked for forgiveness, to a smattering of applause from the congregation.<\/p>\n Pope\u2019s people on Phoenix pilgrimage \u2013 By Leanna Byrne in Dublin<\/strong><\/p>\n Grey clouds, light rain and soft gospel music hangs in the air above the revellers making their mini-pilgrimage from the city centre to Phoenix Park.<\/p>\n Scrums of people wearing rain jackets, hats and backpacks are directed by bunting, bobbing and weaving up to their allocated space, set out alphabetically.<\/p>\n Deck chairs have been wedged into place and sandwiches or other more exotic dishes \u2013 I did see a salmon curry \u2013 have been taken out of bags.<\/p>\n The crowd are happy to be here \u2013 all have booked their tickets to hear what Pope Francis has to say.<\/p>\n Like the pilgrims at Croke Park on Saturday night, these are Pope Francis\u2019s people.<\/p>\n Earlier, he visited Knock during the second day of his trip.<\/p>\n The Marian shrine is a place of Catholic pilgrimage in the west of Ireland, where an apparition of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, is said to have appeared in August 1879.<\/p>\n Each year, about 1.5 million pilgrims from across the world visit the shrine, which also hosted Pope John Paul II during his visit to Ireland in 1979.<\/p>\n \u2018Repellent crimes\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n The Irish Catholic Church has been rocked by revelations of paedophile priests, sexual abuse in Catholic-run orphanages, and the exploitation of women in mother-and-baby homes.<\/p>\n During the first day of his trip, Pope Francis used a speech at Dublin Castle to express his shame at\u00a0the Catholic Church\u2019s failure to adequately address the \u201crepellent crimes\u201d of sex abuse by clergy.<\/p>\n He later met eight survivors of sexual abuse, reportedly telling them he viewed clerical sex abuse as \u201cfilth\u201d.<\/p>\n Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Leo Varadkar delivered a strong warning to the Pope to take action against clergy involved in child abuse and in keeping it secret.<\/p>\n Pope Francis told the crowds at Knock that the \u201copen wound of abuses\u201d committed by the Roman Catholic Church challenged it to be firm in the pursuit of truth and justice.<\/p>\n He said in his prayer to Mary, the mother of Jesus, he had \u201cpresented to her in particular all the victims of abuse of whatever kind committed by members of the Church in Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n Later, in Phoenix Park, he also asked \u201cforgiveness for those single mothers who went looking for their children who had been taken away. It is not a mortal sin.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile in Tuam, County Galway, at least 1,000 people gathered for a silent vigil to remember the Tuam Babies.<\/p>\n The Tuam home was one of 10 institutions in which about 35,000 unmarried pregnant women are thought to have been sent.<\/p>\n Thousands also attended the Stand4Truth event in Dublin to show solidarity with victims of institutional abuse.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, a former top Vatican official has called on the Pope to resign, saying the pontiff knew about allegations of sex abuse by a prominent US cardinal for five years before accepting his resignation last month.<\/p>\n In an 11-page letter, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano said he had told Pope Francis in 2013 that Cardinal Theodore McCarrick had faced extensive accusations of sexually abusing lower-ranking seminarians and priests.<\/p>\n The Vatican has not responded to these claims \u2013 and Archbishop Vigano has not produced any written or other evidence to verify his conversation with Pope Francis. Correspondents say the timing of his letter, released to coincide with the Pope\u2019s landmark visit to Ireland, has raised questions about whether this is a co-ordinated attack from traditionalists within the Catholic hierarchy who oppose Pope Francis.<\/p>\n \u2018Modernised Ireland\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n On Saturday evening, Pope Francis presided over a\u00a0Festival of Families concert in Dublin\u2019s Croke Park stadium, which drew a crowd of about 80,000 people.<\/p>\n The world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli, country singer Nathan Carter and acclaimed Irish singer Daniel O\u2019Donnell were among those who performed.<\/p>\n The Ireland that the Pope is visiting is a different country to that which greeted Pope John Paul II in 1979.<\/p>\n Since the Polish pope\u2019s visit, there have been huge changes in public attitudes to social issues including abortion, contraception, divorce and same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n The country voted for constitutional change on same sex-marriage in 2015 and voted overwhelmingly to overturn its strict abortion law in May.<\/p>\n Pope Francis heard Mr Varadkar, a gay man, speak out against the traditional Catholic teaching on the family.<\/p>\n The taoiseach said that the Republic of Ireland had modernised its laws, \u201cunderstanding that marriages do not always work, that women should make their own decisions and that families come in many forms\u201d \u2013 including those headed by a lone parent, same-sex parents or parents who are divorced and remarried.<\/p>\n You can follow\u00a0minute-by-minute updates on the Pope\u2019s visit here\u00a0on the BBC News website.<\/p>\n \u2013<\/p>\n Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Pope Francis has begged forgiveness for members of the Catholic Church\u2019s hierarchy who \u201ckept quiet\u201d about clerical child sex abuse.
