Asia Argento\u00a0has threatened to take \u201cimmediate legal action\u201d against\u00a0Rose McGowan\u00a0unless the latter retracts a statement\u00a0she made on 27 August following accusations of sexual assault against Argento by actor Jimmy Bennett.<\/p>\n
Argento posted a statement on social media demanding that within 24 hours McGowan retract the \u201chorrendous lies\u201d she claimed were contained in the statement. \u201cIf you fail to address this libel I will have no option other than to take immediate legal action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Argento, a prominent figure in the Harvey Weinstein scandal and who\u00a0in an October 2017 New Yorker article\u00a0accused Weinstein of sexually assaulting her, was herself accused of sexual assault by actor Jimmy Bennett in\u00a0a New York Times article in August. Bennett also claimed she had paid him $380,000 to keep the accusation quiet.\u00a0Argento has denied the assault allegation, and claims her then partner Anthony Bourdain paid the money to Bennett to help him with \u201csevere economic problems\u201d.<\/p>\n
McGowan, another prominent Weinstein accuser\u00a0who claimed the disgraced producer raped her\u00a0when she was 23,\u00a0first responded to the Argento accusation on social media\u00a0on 20 August, writing \u201cmy heart is broken\u201d. The statement to which Argento refers was issued seven days later.<\/p>\n
Weinstein has denied all allegations of non-consensual sexual relations.<\/p>\n
Police in Los Angeles are investigating Bennett\u2019s claim\u00a0after it emerged no police report had been filed in 2013, the time of the alleged assault. The pair had met after working together on\u00a0The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, Argento\u2019s 2004 adaptation of the JT LeRoy novel.<\/p>\n
McGowan has not yet responded to Argento\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n
