Preliminary results from the 2018 agriculture census have shown a considerable reduction in the farming population in Ghana.<\/p>\n
According to the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the last census conducted some 33 years ago showed that within every 4.7 million households there was at least one person engaged in farming.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe preliminary results are very interesting. 33 years ago when the last census was done, there was 4.7 million households with at least one person doing farming. This number has reduced to 2.6 [million] this year. This number has reduced to 2.6 [million] this year [2018]. So there has been some structural changes going on, and I\u2019m looking forward to the final analysis to see what other changes have come,\u201d he noted in an interview on the\u00a0Citi Breakfast Show\u00a0on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
A recent Ghana Statistical Service Labour force report found that as education levels increase interest in agriculture declines.<\/p>\n
The report stated that 18 percent of people with no education want to go into agriculture, compared to only 2 percent who had two or more degrees.<\/p>\n
In responding to the report, the Minister said \u201cwe are trying to change the image of agriculture to lure more professionals in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Minister used the opportunity to tout government\u2019s policies in the agric sector including planting for food and jobs among others.<\/p>\n
President Nana Akufo-Addo launched the 2018 Ghana Census of Agriculture in June 2018 to inform the formulation of strategies and policies, as well as the monitoring and evaluation of such policies in the agric sector.<\/p>\n
The census is a collaborative effort between the Ghana Statistical Service and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, with technical support from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).<\/p>\n
It is aimed at collecting, processing and disseminating information on the nature and structure of agriculture, availability of agricultural and social services in agricultural communities, and the potentials and constraints for development in those communities to serve as a better guide for effective policy making.<\/p>\n
The collection of data for the census began in April 2018.<\/p>\n
