Photograph: Jonathan Brady\/PA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A British MP has become the first sitting politician for 30 years to be jailed after she lied to police when she was issued with a speeding ticket.<\/p>\n<p>Solicitor Fiona Onasanya had denied being behind the wheel when her car was spotted being driven at 41mph in a 30mph zone, in July 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The Peterborough MP was thrown out of the Labour Party after being convicted of perverting the course of justice.<\/p>\n<p>She has been jailed for three months after a re-trial at the Old Bailey.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard evidence Onasanya was texting as well as speeding, during the summer recess.<\/p>\n<p>Her brother Festus was jailed for 10 months for his involvement, after pleading guilty to the same charge.<\/p>\n<p>Onasanya was elected as Labour MP for Peterborough in June 2017, six weeks before committing the offence, in Thorney, Cambridgeshire.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace disappear mom_appear\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/A16F\/production\/_104872314_mediaitem104175810.jpg\" alt=\"Festus Onasanya\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>Festus Onasanya was jailed for 10 months after admitting perverting the course of justice<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>She had ousted Conservative Stewart Jackson, who had held the seat for 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>Sentencing Onasanya, Mr Justice Stuart-Smith told he she had made a \u201cdisastrous decision\u201d and that \u201cevidence that you didn\u2019t know what you were doing, as a qualified solicitor is incredible\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said Onasanya \u201chad been an able parliamentarian and a role model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have not simply let yourself down, you have let down those who look to you for inspiration, your party, your profession and Parliament,\u201d he told her.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution told the court she went on to collude with her brother Festus to avoid being subject to the speeding ticket.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A British MP has become the first sitting politician for 30 years to be jailed after she lied to police when she was issued with a speeding ticket.
