{"id":17873,"date":"2021-01-21T12:14:46","date_gmt":"2021-01-21T12:14:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=17873"},"modified":"2021-01-21T12:14:51","modified_gmt":"2021-01-21T12:14:51","slug":"ashanti-region-has-the-highest-teenage-pregnancy-rate-in-ghana-ges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/?p=17873","title":{"rendered":"Ashanti Region has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Ghana &#8211; GES"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=17873\">Ghana Education Service (GES)<\/a> has disclosed that the Ashanti Region leads in teenage pregnancies in the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinegh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/th-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17874\" width=\"498\" height=\"337\"\/><figcaption>Teenage pregnancy<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the statistics from the GES, the region averages about a thousand (1000) cases per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Ashanti Regional Girl Child Coordinator of GES, Hannah Amponsah, \u201cthere were 128 cases in the upper primaries, while JHS recorded 783 and 310 cases in the senior high schools with a cumulative figure of 1,228 female teenage pregnancy cases in the Ashanti Region\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on Akoma FM\u2018s morning show GhanAkoma during a roundtable stakeholders discussion on education ahead of schools reopening, Mrs Hannah Amponsah explained that the situation is likely to double as the figures of 2020 and 2021 are being compiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[My fear] is that with the COVID-19 wave and its attendant lockdown resulting in total shut down of schools, teenage pregnancies among students may surge because the children have stayed home for almost 11 months. Even when the JHS leavers were sitting for their [BECE] last year, there were a number of pregnant girls who were identified so I\u2019m sure the 2020 statistics will increase as compared to previous years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statistics span from 2018 to 2019 with Greater Accra following with some 404 cases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ghana Education Service (GES) has disclosed that the Ashanti Region leads in teenage pregnancies in the country.
