The Supreme Court has set date on which to deliver judgement on the election petition filed by former president John Dramani Mahama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After hearing on Monday, February 22, Chair of the seven-member panel Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah announced that judgement will be delivered on Thursday, March 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Mahama, who was the Presidential Candidate of the\u00a0National Democratic Congress (NDC)\u00a0in the disputed\u00a0elections, had brought the case to the apex court of Ghana, praying it to set aside a declaration of the results made by the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensa, on Wednesday, December 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs Mensa had declared Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as winner of the December 7 presidential\u00a0elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Mr Mahama on Wednesday, December 30 filed his petition, citing \u201cserious violations\u201d of the 1992 Constitution by the EC and its Chair, who was the Returning Officer of the disputed\u00a0elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The petition prayed the Supreme Court to declare the results of the\u00a0elections\u00a0as \u201cunconstitutional, null and void and of no effect whatsoever\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also prayed the Court to enjoin the Commission to re-run the\u00a0elections\u00a0between him and Mr Akufo-Addo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only did he cite EC as the First Respondent, but Mr Mahama cited President Akufo-Addo as a Second Respondent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later Mr Mahama gave the reasons why he chose the legal path after scattered protests by his party\u2019s supporters across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome people have asked me what I hope to gain by challenging the results of this\u00a0election,\u201d he said at the sunset press conference on the day he filed his petition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet me tell you. I want perhaps the very same thing that my opponent wanted when in 2012 he challenged the results of that\u00a0election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want the removal of doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want for all of us to know that our\u00a0elections\u00a0should be free, fair and safe and that we don\u2019t have to settle for a process that leaves us confused and with more questions than answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want a Ghana where institutions of state can be held to account where we can stand on principle and demand transparency without the risk of losing our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hearing began last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the witnesses invited by the petitioner were NDC\u2019s General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, former Presidential Staffer Dr Michael Kpessah-Whyte and Rojo Mettle Nunoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two respondents elected not to present their witnesses despite them filing their statements in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This had cajoled the petitioner to re-open the case but this was unanimously dismissed by the seven-member panel. A review of that ruling was also dismissed on Monday, February 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The petitioner is expected to deliver his closing submissions on Tuesday, February 23 in time for judgement on Thursday, March 4.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
