{"id":19104,"date":"2021-04-11T17:42:07","date_gmt":"2021-04-11T17:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=19104"},"modified":"2021-04-11T17:42:09","modified_gmt":"2021-04-11T17:42:09","slug":"ghana-boxing-authority-slaps-richard-commey-with-2-year-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/?p=19104","title":{"rendered":"Ghana Boxing Authority slaps Richard Commey with 2-year ban"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has banned former IBF lightweight champion Richard Commey for two years&nbsp;after he made false accusations against its executives in a media interview.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Peter Zwennes-led GBA in a letter addressed to the boxer dated April 9, 2021, and intercepted by\u00a0Graphic Online\u00a0imposed a two-year ban from all its activities on Commey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be recalled that Commey had in an interview with social media channel Kpanlogo Mashi TV in February made what the GBA described as &#8220;false accusations and disparaging remarks&#8221; about its Executives and even though&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.graphic.com.gh\/sports\/boxing\/richard-commey-apologises-to-ghana-boxing-authority.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the boxer later apologised for his comments<\/a>&nbsp;the sanctioning body for professional boxing in Ghana insist his apology was half-hearted and not contrite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We refer to the proceedings of the Ghana Boxing Authority Disciplinary\/Arbitration Committee Session held on Wednesday the 31st day of March, 2021 at which you appeared in response to the Summons to show cause why you should not be sanctioned for the false accusations and disparaging remarks you made about the GBA Executive in the interview you recently granted Kpanlogo Mashi TV in the United States of America. Notwithstanding the seriousness of your misconduct the GBA took cognisance amongst others of your admission of guilt, the apology you rendered (albeit half hearted and not contrite) as well as the intervention of Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II the Ga Manste in mitigation of your sentence,&#8221; the letter reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For your sanction the GBA hereby imposes on you a total ban from all GBA organised functions and related activities for a period of Two (2) years commencing the 31st day of March, 2021. It is hoped that the haughty and arrogant posture that you have adopted towards fellow members of the Boxing fraternity in recent times will cease in the aftermath of this decision&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commey, 34 (30-3, 27 KOs) is in the country for holidays but is based in Bronx, New York, USA.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He last fought in Ghana two years ago on March 11, 2017, when he scored a unanimous decision verdict over Hedi Slimani in a vacant World Boxing Council International Silver Light Title at the Bukom Boxing Arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fighter who was recently&nbsp;named Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Association of Ghana Commission for Women and Children Affairs (UNACWCA)&nbsp;is expected to return to the ring in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His last fight was a sixth-round stoppage victory of Jackson Marinez on February 13, 2021, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.graphic.com.gh\/images\/WhatsApp_Image_2021-04-11_at_063442.jpeg\" alt=\"GBA Letter to ban Richard Commey\" title=\"GBA Letter to ban Richard Commey\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Commey&#8217;s apology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an apology letter on February 26, 2021, Commey described his comments as unfortunate and promised to avoid similar utterances in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has come to my attention that in a recent interview I may have caused offence to the GBA and others in the boxing fraternity by using certain words which now I realise were inappropriate. I wish to apologise to the GBA and to all concerned. I realise that in my position as a role model to many I have to be mindful of my actions,\u201d parts of the letter read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn future I will refrain from airing certain views in public and deal with them diplomatically and appropriately.
