Former US Vice-President, Walter Mondale has died in Minneapolis on Monday aged 93, his family has announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Mondale was Jimmy Carter\u2019s running mate for his winning 1976 presidential bid and defeat four years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Carter said he considered Mr Mondale the \u201cbest vice-president in our country\u2019s history\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Mondale lost heavily to Ronald Reagan in the 1984 presidential election, securing only his home state of Minnesota and Washington DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That gave him 13 electoral votes compared with President Reagan\u2019s record-high tally of 525.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Mondale is also remembered for choosing Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate \u2013 the first woman on a major-party presidential ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement, Mr Carter said he was \u201can invaluable partner and an able servant of the people of Minnesota, the United States and the world\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRosalynn and I join all Americans in giving thanks for his exemplary life, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement that they \u201cwere able to call one of our nation\u2019s most dedicated patriots and public servants a dear friend and mentor\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJill and I had the opportunity to speak to Fritz and his family over the weekend, to reflect on the years of friendship we shared, and how much we learned from and leaned on each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Mondale\u2019s family earlier said in a statement: \u201cIt is with profound sadness that we share news that our beloved dad passed away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The family paid tribute to his achievements in housing, civil rights and environmental policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They said plans for memorials in both Minnesota and Washington DC would be announced later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
