{"id":20352,"date":"2021-05-05T18:49:43","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T18:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=20352"},"modified":"2021-05-05T18:49:45","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T18:49:45","slug":"local-pharmaceutical-manufacturers-awaiting-clearance-to-produce-covid-19-vaccines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/?p=20352","title":{"rendered":"Local pharmaceutical manufacturers awaiting clearance to produce COVID-19 vaccines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana says it has still not received clearance to produce COVID-19 vaccines locally, more than a year after it began talks with the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local manufactures took up the challenge when COVID-19 hit Ghana, and produced hand sanitisers, nose masks, and other Personal Protective Equipment at the peak of the pandemic, to forestall the need for the government to import these items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The association subsequently appealed to the government to grant it permission to produce COVID-19 vaccines locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a year on, this has not materialized and the government is currently facing challenges securing vaccines to undertake the next stage of vaccination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Executive Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, Lucia Addae Ntiri, said up to 15 companies are willing to start producing vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is important that we start to manufacture vaccines. COVID-19 has taught us that we cannot rely on other economies and other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve also engaged the Ministry [of Health] about our willingness to manufacture vaccines for the country\u2026 the dialogue started even before COVID hit Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs. Ntiri explained that the extensive dialogue was important because of the role the state would have to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the pharmaceutical companies will have to make sure the government ensures demand for the manufactured vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf course the government will also help us secure the intellectual property and patent to be able to manufacture [the vaccines]. We\u2019ll have some dialogue as to whatever support will be needed,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has already indicated that Ghana could start importing unpackaged COVID-19 vaccines in bulk for local companies to fill into vials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said this is likely to happen within six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said some indigenous companies are in the process of getting the needed documentation and clearance to engage in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Akufo-Addo has already indicated Ghana\u2019s willingness to begin manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has established a committee to formulate a concrete plan for<a href=\"https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/2021\/02\/government-sets-up-committee-to-ensure-vaccine-development-in-ghana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u00a0vaccine development and manufacturing in Ghana<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: citinewsroom.com<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Send your news stories to&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:dannyboy744@gmail.com\">dannyboy744@gmail.com<\/a>&nbsp;and via WhatsApp on +233 266777777<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana says it has still not received clearance to produce COVID-19 vaccines locally, more than a year after it began talks with the government.
