His aides said he did not have Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1950s, Kaunda was a key figure in what was then Northern Rhodesia\u2019s independence movement from Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He became president following independence in 1964.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-16039411\">Kenneth Kaunda: A pioneer of African independence<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/world-africa-47639452\">Africa Live: Kaunda\u2019s \u2018immense contribution\u2019 recalled<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As head of the left-leaning United National Independence Party (UNIP), Kaunda then led the country through decades of one-party rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He stepped down after losing multi-party elections in 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am sad to inform we have lost Mzee,\u201d Kaunda\u2019s son, Kambarage, wrote on his late father\u2019s Facebook page, using a term of respect. \u201cLet\u2019s pray for him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zambian President Edgar Lungu said the country was mourning \u201ca true African icon\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learnt of your passing this afternoon with great sadness,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EdgarChagwaLungu\/posts\/4251811511541708\">he wrote on Facebook<\/a>. \u201cOn behalf of the entire nation and on my own behalf I pray that the entire Kaunda family is comforted as we mourn our First President and true African icon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another tribute came from Kalusha Bwalya, former captain of the national football team, who said Kaunda had made \u201can immense impact\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kaunda \u2013 popularly known as KK \u2013 was a strong supporter of efforts to end apartheid in South Africa. He was also a leading supporter of liberation movements in Mozambique and what is now Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In later life Kaunda turned his attention to the fight against HIV after one of his sons, Masuzyo, died from an Aids-related disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe fought colonialism.
