{"id":27616,"date":"2021-08-19T11:06:22","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T11:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=27616"},"modified":"2021-08-19T11:06:23","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T11:06:23","slug":"lack-of-transparency-on-funding-sources-for-agenda-111-project-problematic-alex-segbefia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/?p=27616","title":{"rendered":"Lack of transparency on funding sources for Agenda 111 project problematic \u2013 Alex Segbefia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A former Health Minister under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Alex Segbefia, has said the government\u2019s lack of transparency on the sources of funding for the Agenda 111 hospitals project is problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, President Akufo-Addo failed to fulfill his earlier promise of constructing 88 district hospitals due to lack of funds and poor planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He insisted that the same way the president promised those hospitals is the same way he is also promising these ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on Citi TV\u2019s Current Affairs show The Point of View, on August 18, 2021, Alex Segbefia called for broader consultation and transparency from the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also said the government has created a problem for the project by taking it from the Ministry of Health and rather placing it under a special purpose vehicle at the Chief Of Staff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou say you are building seven hospitals from $100 million and you haven\u2019t told us where you are going to get funding for the remaining 92. So clearly the money isn\u2019t there. We have been here before because the same way he promised the 88 hospitals is the same way he promised 111 hospitals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou haven\u2019t told us where the money is coming from and you have also created a problem by changing the structure, and we are watching on carefully because it is no longer the Ministry of Health handling this. There is a special purpose vehicle or group of people who are housed at the Chief of Staff\u2019s office under the office of the President who are supposed to oversee these whole projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former President, John Dramani Mahama, has also described the hospital projects as an afterthought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Mahama maintains the hospital projects will not be completed before the NPP leaves office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, there is no transparency about the construction of the projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is only an afterthought that suddenly they realized that they must be doing some infrastructure and Agenda 111 has been conjured with no transparency as to how the money for the projects are going to be procured.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIs it going to lead to more borrowing when we already have such a high level [of debt],\u201d he questioned further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Agenda 111<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, cut sod for the commencement of the project on Tuesday at Trede in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agenda 111 is the culmination of a pledge to improve healthcare infrastructure after the country dealt with the pressures of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the allocations indicated in the budget, the government said it has already set aside $100 million as commencement funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government expects the projects to be completed within 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, sites have been identified for 88 of the 111 hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Send your news stories to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:dannyboy744@gmail.com\">dannyboy744@gmail.com<\/a>\u00a0and via WhatsApp on +233 266777777<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former Health Minister under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Alex Segbefia, has said the government\u2019s lack of transparency on the sources of funding for the Agenda 111 hospitals project is problematic.
