{"id":27962,"date":"2021-08-25T20:25:48","date_gmt":"2021-08-25T20:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=27962"},"modified":"2021-08-25T20:25:49","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T20:25:49","slug":"flat-chests-tanzanian-president-under-fire-for-comments-on-countrys-female-footballers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/?p=27962","title":{"rendered":"\u201cFlat Chests\u201d: Tanzanian President under fire for comments on country\u2019s female footballers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tanzania\u2019s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has come under fire for remarks about women footballers having \u201cflat chests\u201d and suggesting they would not be attractive candidates for marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hassan made the comments at a ceremony on Sunday to celebrate the victory of a national men\u2019s team in a regional football championship, where, ironically, she also called for better funding for women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cFor those who have flat chests, you might think they are men and not women,\u201d she said at Sunday\u2019s event.<\/p><p>\u201cAnd if you look at their faces you might wonder \u2026 because if you want to marry, you want someone who is attractive, a lady who has the qualities that you want.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that for the women footballers, \u201cthose qualities have disappeared\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hassan, who took office in March after the sudden death of her predecessor John Magafuli, is the only serving female head of state in Africa alongside Ethiopia\u2019s President Sahle-Work Zewde, whose role is mainly ceremonial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cToday they are making us proud as a nation when they bring trophies to the country but if you look at their lives in the future, when the legs are tired from playing, when they don\u2019t have the health to play, what life will they be living?\u201d she said.<\/p><p>\u201cThe life of marriage is like a dream to them. Because even if one of you here takes them home as your wife, your mother will ask if they are a woman or a fellow man.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Hassan\u2019s comments were widely derided online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe comment by president @SuluhuSamia on women footballers is a humiliation to all women,\u201d said Catherine Ruge, the head of the women\u2019s wing of the opposition Chadema party and former MP.<\/p><p>\u201cAll women deserve respect.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Maria Sarungi, the founder of civil society group Change Tanzania, echoed that view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cSo all those cheering a female presidency\u2026@SuluhuSamia is denigrating female football players for having \u2018flat chests\u2019 and thus lacking attractive features necessary to get married.
