Members of the Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACOFA) boycotted this year\u2019s farmers\u2019 day celebration following what they described as Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) failure to address their concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to them, COCOBOD has over the years refused to consider their welfare as a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also accuse COCOBOD of not involving them when taking decisions that affect their lives, especially issues concerning their pension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephenson Anane Boateng, the National President of the Association, in an interview said: \u201cWe have boycotted the celebration because the kind of treatment we get is not fair to us. We\u2019ve sent them a lot of petitions. We\u2019ve written to all the authorities but nobody has said anything and even there has been no reply. COCOBOD contracted some of our people to do mass spraying, they used chemicals that have affected our people, and they are not being taken care of. COCOBOD has not provided them with medical care. It is just bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghana is estimated to have 1.5 million cocoa farmers, many of whom are believed to be poor, although they deal with Ghana\u2019s most valuable cash crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, cocoa farmers threatened to protest over the implementation of the cocoa farmers\u2019 pension scheme<\/strong> <\/a>by withholding produce from markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government launched the scheme to provide guaranteed retirement benefits to over 1.5 million cocoa farmers across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the farmers are kicking against the scheme\u2019s implementation and have questioned the composition of the board used by the Ghana Cocoa Board to carry out the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a related development, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commended farmers for their critical role in ensuring food security in Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post to mark farmers\u2019 day, the President acknowledged the pivotal role farmers played in averting food shortages at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President thus pledged the government\u2019s commitment to creating a conducive environment for the agricultural sector to continually thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s event has taken on added significance because of the efforts of our farmers and fisherfolk in ensuring that there were no shortages of food at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is wealth in agriculture, and the government will continue to create the enabling environment and put in place the necessary policies and programmes for the rapid growth of the agricultural sector,\u201d the post said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
