MICHAEL CARRICK steadied the ship after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s turbulent demise.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of Ralf Rangnick’s initial tasks at Manchester United<\/a> could be to win over the squad after Michael Carrick’s surprise departure. Rangnick’s tenure as United interim manager commenced on Friday, with the 63-year-old set to meet his squad for the first time in the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mere minutes after the Red Devils’ 3-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday night, Carrick’s exit was confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After 15 successful years at the club as a player and coach, the ex-midfield maestro has decided to follow Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out of the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his post-match interview, he explained that players reacted to his announcement in the dressing room with ‘shock’ and ’emotion’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carrick was expected to continue as a first-team coach, and he purposely hid the news from the squad to maintain focus on ending his time at the club on a high, and a high it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his first press conference on Friday, Rangnick revealed he became aware of Carrick’s exit plans on Wednesday and tried to prevent it in a lengthy discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told reporters: “Michael, I got to know this two days ago. I met with Michael and Kieran, [and] I had a long private conversation for more than an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I tried to convince him to stay. In the end, I had to accept that. I’m more than happy to work with the current coaching staff; I need their expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I will try to find two or three people that will join us in the coming weeks, but due to Brexit, it’s not that easy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United’s win over Mikel Arteta’s in-form Arsenal was the last of three positive results Carrick recorded as caretaker boss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He garnered an immediate reaction after Solskjaer’s sacking in the crucial 2-0 win at Villarreal to secure safe passage into the Champions League knockout stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United then travelled to title contenders Chelsea and took away a respectable point, and it would’ve been three had Aaron Wan-Bissaka not conceded a cheap second-half penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The players undoubtedly listened and respected Carrick, but Rangnick will demand respect from the minute he arrives at Carrington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With minimal time on the training pitch available amid the hectic winter period of fixtures, Rangnick will be drilling his philosophy into the squad at every opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will only know the reaction to such in time, but it’s more than likely to be a drastic change to what life at the training ground has been like under Solskjaer and Carrick’s watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no time to waste, though, with United already chasing the top four and Rangnick needs to win the dressing room over quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
