Melinda French Gates says that realizing she needed to divorce Bill Gates<\/a> after 27 years of marriage and three kids was the \u201clowest moment\u201d in her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The billionaire philanthropist admitted that everyone has \u201clow moments\u201d and she is \u201cnot happy every day\u201d in an interview with USA Today<\/a> published Sunday, adding that divorce wasn\u2019t something she \u201cever thought would happen\u201d to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt certainly wasn\u2019t what I thought on the day I got married,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I realized for myself, I needed to make a healthier choice, and that was just a very, very sad day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gates, 66, and French Gates, 57, announced their split <\/a>in May 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,\u201d the former couple said in a joint statement at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their divorce was finalized<\/a> in August 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

French Gates recently revealed how her ex-husband\u2019s friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein played a role in her decision<\/a> to end the marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, French Gates clarified that was not the only reason for the demise of the marriage, adding that it was \u201cnot one thing but many things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gates allegedly had an affair<\/a> with a Microsoft employee, which the company\u2019s board became aware of in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI certainly believe in forgiveness, so I thought we had worked through some of that,\u201d French Gates also told King, 67. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t one moment or one specific thing that happened. There just came a point in time where there was enough there where I realized it just wasn\u2019t healthy, and I couldn\u2019t trust<\/a> what we had.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former couple, who started the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation together, share daughters Jennifer, 25, and Phoebe, 19, and son Rory, 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
