Following the upward fuel price adjustment at the pumps, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has also announced that commuters should expect an increment in transport fares.
In an interview with Joy News, the Head of GPRTU\u2019s Communications, Abass Imoro, opined that the decision by his outfit has become important due to the sharp surge in the price of fuel at the pumps.

\u201cWhen we came out with this current adjustment, fuel price was at GH\u20b57.990 [per liter], so we are waiting for the 10 percent ratio so if it crosses to the GH\u20b58.8 [per litre], we will come out with a new price. That is the only way we can sustain our transport industry,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Tuesday, March 15, 2022, news broke that prices of petroleum products will from Wednesday, March 16 experience a significant surge as consumers are expected to pay between GH\u00a210 and GH\u00a211 per litre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the GPRTU, it is deliberating on the percentage of adjustment to be made to the existing fares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Moro further stated that the government has also failed to engage the Union on the recent price hikes at the fuel pumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Union\u2019s Communications Head, thus blamed the government for the frequent transport fare adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe came up with this strategy which would have helped, we wouldn\u2019t have gotten to where we are today, because internally, we have created our taxes, levies, and margins of which we engaged government about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf the government listened to us or was able to do something about it, we wouldn\u2019t be here. So we need to do this to sustain our members,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The GPRTU only increased fares by 15 percent on February 26, barely a month ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament is demanding the immediate removal of three taxes on petroleum products to mitigate the impact of rising prices of crude oil on the international market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The demand by the minority comes as consumers are currently buying Petrol and Diesel above 8 cedis from the pumps and its threatening to exceed nine cedis in the next window which begins today, March 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
