{"id":46975,"date":"2022-08-30T12:35:32","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T12:35:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=46975"},"modified":"2022-08-30T12:35:35","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T12:35:35","slug":"serena-williams-will-the-us-open-really-be-the-end-for-the-american-great","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/?p=46975","title":{"rendered":"Serena Williams: Will the US Open really be the end for the American great?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Venue:<\/strong>&nbsp;Flushing Meadows, New York&nbsp;<strong>Dates:<\/strong>&nbsp;29 August-11 September<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Coverage:<\/strong>&nbsp;Daily radio commentaries across BBC Sounds and the BBC Sport website and app, with selected live text commentaries and match reports on the website and app<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From the glowing video tributes and an array of A-List stars in attendance, everything on a celebratory night at the US Open pointed towards Serena Williams\u2019 impending retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams\u2019 first-round match on Monday \u2013 which could have been the final of her storied career \u2013 was the centrepiece of an emotional fanfare on Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion recently announced she plans to \u201cevolve away\u201d from the sport and her home major is expected to be a farewell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But after beating Montenegro\u2019s Danka Kovinic in the first round, 40-year-old Williams continued to play a guessing game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked if this was definitely her final tournament, she smiled and said: \u201cI\u2019ve been pretty vague about it. I\u2019m going to stay vague because you never know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Night matches on Ashe always create an electric atmosphere, but this was another level to many others and provided a sense of theatre and drama not often seen at a tennis event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It started with a video montage paying homage to Williams\u2019 achievements as a player and a person, while she waited backstage before arriving in a caped glittery dress and diamond-encrusted trainers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A string of big-name celebrities from fashion, film, television, music and politics were watching from the crowd, before tennis legend Billie Jean King and television icon Oprah Winfrey paid tribute in another post-match celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That came after Williams showed she could still win at the highest level, overcoming a scrappy start to beat world number 80 Kovinic in straight sets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked if nights like these had changed her mind about her retirement plans, the former world number one said: \u201cIt\u2019s extremely difficult still because I absolutely love being out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe more tournaments I play, I feel like the more I can belong out there. That\u2019s a tough feeling to have, and to leave knowing the more you do it, the more you can shine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s time for me, you know, to evolve to the next thing. I think it\u2019s important because there are so many other things that I want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Williams living in the moment \u2013 but what\u2019s next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With this potentially Williams\u2019 goodbye, it was not surprising the US Open \u2013 which she has won six times \u2013 wanted to honour one of their greatest champions in front of an adoring crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But her victory also begs the question what will happen after when \u2013 or perhaps if? \u2013 she does lose in New York this fortnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was so loud. I just was overwhelmed in a good way,\u201d Williams said about the reception when she walked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was just thinking, like: Is this for real? At the same time, I\u2019m also thinking: I still have a match to play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the 2021 Australian Open, Williams said she would not tell anyone when it was time to retire and became upset when pressed further in Melbourne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many thought that day had already arrived with her having not played for almost a year, but then she returned to the tour in preparation for this year\u2019s Wimbledon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then came last month\u2019s announcement in Vogue of her plan to \u201cevolve away\u201d from the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sources close to the former world number one have told BBC Sport it is definitely the end for Williams, who wants to extend her family with husband Alexis and give four-year-old daughter Olympia a brother or sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many players, including Williams, have successfully returned to the sport after becoming a mother but none as old as a player who turns 41 next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the US Open\u2019s plan was to celebrate her career in the glow of a victory? And then leave Williams \u2013 who says she was \u201creally emotional\u201d following recent defeats in Toronto and Cincinnati \u2013 to slope off relatively quietly following any exit at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, she will face Estonian second seed Anett Kontaveit, who has struggled for consistent form this year in spite of her ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt this point, honestly, everything is a bonus for me I feel,\u201d Williams said when asked about the second-round match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI mean, I think every opponent is very difficult. I\u2019ve seen that over the summer. The next one is even more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good that I was able to get this under my belt. I don\u2019t know, I\u2019m just not even thinking about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just thinking about just this moment.
