Nigerian officials have called on the authorities in India to ensure the safety of Nigerian students in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This followed fighting between Nigerian and Indian students at the GD Goenka University in the capital Delhi, sparked by a football match dispute last weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Footage of the clash has been shared on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident at the university\u2019s Gurugram campus forced more than 80 Nigerians to flee and take refuge at the country\u2019s embassy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The chairwoman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said \u201ca few injuries\u201d had been recorded during the violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Mrs Dabiri added that \u201ccalm\u201d had been restored and that the Nigerian students have since returned to the campus after a meeting between officials of the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a tweet, the Nigerian representative also said the country\u2019s embassy had got a \u201cwritten commitment by the Indian authorities to protect\u201d Nigerian students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also advised that any student who felt \u201cthreatened\u201d should report to the diplomatic mission of Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Indian authorities said they are investigating the incident \u2013 including reviewing CCTV footage of the violence, according to local media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thousands of African students \u2013 many of them Nigerians \u2013 are studying at several Indian universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there have often been tensions between the locals and Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local media report that last month some Indian students had protested against African students playing on a football pitch, insisting that they should instead do so inside their hostels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
