A political scientist Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has said that Ghana does not need a National Cathedral at this moment in view of the difficult economic situation the country finds itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt this time we don\u2019t need it,\u201d he said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday December 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further indicated that the financing mechanism for the project was not transparent enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said \u201cInitially, we thought the churches were going to finance but later we were made to know that the state was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUtmost transparency, we missed that,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parliament did not approve the controversial GHS80 million that was earmarked for construction of the National Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To that end, the amount has been channeled into Communication and Road sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the Ranking Member on the joint committee of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, on Tuesday, December 20 dedicated a Minority voting decision to reject the budget estimates for the building of the National Cathedral as captured in the 2023 budget statement to Ghanaians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the decision was a victory to all Ghanaians as previous allocations to the project were not properly accounted for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eleven Minority MPs as against 10 Majority MPs, therefore, voted to reject the GH\u00a280-million allocation for the continuation of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on this development, Member of Parliament for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said \u201cGovernment compelled to withdraw and reallocate the obnoxious and dubious GHS80million for President Akufo-Addo\u2019s Cathedral to the Roads and Communications sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe won this battle for God and the suffering masses. Thank you all for your unflinching support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
