The allegations that Speaker Alban Bagbin is postponing the recall of Members of Parliament (MPs) because of his political connection have been refuted by the Ghanaian Parliament.

The Parliamentary Service confirmed in a statement on Thursday, April 18, 2024, that Bagbin is on assignment in Dubai and that the House is currently in recess with MPs attending to constituents.

No Member of Parliament has asked for an early recall, the statement stressed. Outside pressure to force a recall was deemed by Parliament to be “frivolous and vexatious” and an unwanted encroachment on parliamentary business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is important to observe that no Member of Parliament has made such a request; hence, appeals by those outside of Parliament for a recall of Parliament are baseless and vexatious, and amount to interference in the business of Parliament.\u201d

The balanced nature of Parliament made it clear that cooperation and consensus-building are essential. It also rejected as “unfounded” any suggestions that the Speaker’s unwillingness to comply with recall requests stems from his affiliation with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). “Due to its divided nature, Parliament recognises the necessity for cooperation and reaching compromise, and the Speaker has made it a goal to act impartially and fairly during his term. Thus, it is regrettable and false to suggest that the Speaker is not responding to recall requests due to his political affiliation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Parliament wishes to announce that it is expected to reconvene in the latter part of May 2024, barring any emergency or unforeseen circumstance.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
