In an attempt to put an end to the impending Ejisu by-election, which is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, 2024, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has filed an application for an interlocutory injunction against the Electoral Commission (EC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move by the CPP aims to suspend the by-election until a lawsuit challenging the candidature of one Esther Osei is resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Initiated by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the CPP, Emmanuel Gallo, the lawsuit asserts that the party formally communicated its decision not to participate in the by-election to the Electoral Commission on Thursday, April 18, 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the six reliefs sought by the CPP, the party is petitioning the court to affirm that no Constituency Branch Conference of the CPP has endorsed Esther Osei or any individual as a parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu Constituency by-election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CPP contends that the selection of a parliamentary candidate for the constituency should involve a Constituency Branch Party Conference, followed by approval from the Central Committee, as mandated by its constitution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The party asserts, however, that neither Esther Osei nor any other candidate in the Ejisu Constituency has gone through such procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The party alleges that Ms. Osei or any purported candidate representing the CPP in the by-election has not been officially endorsed through the party\u2019s internal procedures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CPP emphasises that its Central Committee has not considered or approved any candidate for the Ejisu Constituency by-election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CPP is suing to get the High Court to declare that neither Ms. Osei nor any other candidate for the Ejisu Constituency by-election has received the endorsement of the party’s Central Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The party also asks the court to issue an injunction to prevent the by-election until its demands and claims are resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
