Former President Jerry John Rawlings marked 2018\u2019s Fathers\u2019 Day with a charge to men to strive to be responsible fathers.<\/p>\n
Opening up about fatherhood on TV3\u2019s Kaptured by Women, he said fatherhood was a godly duty that had unfortunately been shirked by some men.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t need that money to impart a sense of discipline\u00a0in your child, to be a good\u00a0counsellor to your child, to be friendly to your child when they reach the appropriate age.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s not leave all these burdens on the mothers. It is very much our responsibility,\u201d the father of four stated.<\/p>\n
That said, Mr. Rawlings harboured some regrets about his parenting.<\/p>\n \u201cI wish I could have done more but under the circumstances. It was very difficult for me\u2026 it is their mother [Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings] who did the most for all our children in spite of building the 31st<\/sup>December women\u2019s movement, travelling and crisscrossing the country,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n He recalled that he kept an emotional distance from his kids to ensure that they wouldn\u2019t be greatly affected if any unfortunate incident befell him.<\/p>\n Mr.Rawlings first became head of state as a\u00a0flight lieutenant\u00a0of the\u00a0Ghana Air Force\u00a0following a\u00a0coup d\u2019\u00e9tat\u00a0in 1979<\/p>\n \u201cI deliberately did not want them to be badly affected if I died. A much as I love them, as much as I wanted to be with them, it was something I had to deny myself so that they wouldn\u2019t get that emotionally attached to me until I felt things were safe enough.\u201d<\/p>\n Nonetheless, he still holds fatherhood in high esteem, stressing that \u201cto be a responsible father is a must.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cLet me take this opportunity to say a big thank you to fatherhood.
