{"id":8710,"date":"2018-06-17T23:41:31","date_gmt":"2018-06-17T22:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kumasionlinegh.com\/?p=8710"},"modified":"2018-06-17T23:41:31","modified_gmt":"2018-06-17T22:41:31","slug":"moscow-crash-taxi-driver-feared-crowd-lynching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/?p=8710","title":{"rendered":"Moscow crash taxi driver \u2018feared crowd lynching\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8711\" src=\"http:\/\/kumasionlinegh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/The-car-came-to-a-halt-after-hitting-a-road-sign.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/The-car-came-to-a-halt-after-hitting-a-road-sign.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.kumasionlinetv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/The-car-came-to-a-halt-after-hitting-a-road-sign-410x230.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Moscow taxi driver who ploughed into pedestrians says he fled because he feared the crowd would kill him.<\/p>\n<p>Footage shows people chasing and then kicking him after Saturday\u2019s crash in which at least seven people \u2013 including Mexican World Cup fans \u2013 were injured.<\/p>\n<p>The man says he had been at the wheel for 20 hours, and mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.<\/p>\n<p>Detained at the scene, he has been identified by police as a 28-year-old national of Kyrgyzstan.<\/p>\n<p>A criminal investigation is now under way.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>Driver\u2019s account<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>CCTV footage published in Russian media shows the taxi veer out of a queue of stationary traffic and accelerate into pedestrians before coming to a halt.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/4D06\/production\/_102081791_de27-1.jpg\" alt=\"The driver (centre) is chased by passers-by\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>The driver then tries to run away \u2013 but is quickly caught by several passers-by.<\/p>\n<p>The incident happened on the Ilyinka street near the Red Square \u2013 right in the heart of Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Police later released a video of the suspect being questioned about the crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to brake, I wanted to let someone through,\u201d he says, visibly upset. \u201cI switched off for a second and hit the accelerator\u2026. then I saw the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He says he fled because he thought the crowd of people \u201cwere going to kill\u201d him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were so many of them,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>He says he had about two hours of sleep before driving for 20 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect, who says he is a teetotaller, says the crash was accidental.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>\u2018Deliberate\u2019 crash<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>But one witness, who was across the road at the time of the crash, questioned this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the feeling that he did it deliberately because he was in the traffic jam with the cars going really slowly,\u201d said Viktoria Geranovich.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could he lose control of the wheel, push the gas and drive into the crowds?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said \u201cmostly girls\u201d were knocked down, but people rushed to help and the ambulance arrived quickly. \u201cThank god everything went well.
