The removal of Charlotte Osei and her two deputies,\u00a0Amadu\u00a0Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwa, from office, followed the recommendation of a Committee set up by the Chief Justice.<\/p>\n
Charlotte Osei was investigated over\u00a0six allegations<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of various procurement breaches, for which a prima facie case was established against her.<\/p>\n The committee\u2019s recommendations were binding on the President, Mr. Short noted.<\/p>\n \u201cThe President doesn\u2019t have discretion in the matter so I don\u2019t understand the argument or the statements of those who are saying that the President had acted in a manner which suggests that he had victimized the persons concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n Nana Addo speaks<\/strong><\/p>\n In his first comments on the matter, President Akufo-Addo also explained that he simply followed the law.<\/p>\n \u201cArticle 146(9) of the Constitution demands that I act on the recommendations of the committee. I have no power to disagree with the recommendations of the Committee, the Constitution does not give me that power. That is why I have removed the Chairperson of the EC and the two deputies.\u201d<\/p>\n Where the Chief Justice decides that there is a prima facie case, he shall set up a committee consisting of three Justices of the Superior Courts or Chairmen of the Regional Tribunals or both, appointed by the Judicial council and two other persons who are not members of the Council of State, nor members of Parliament, nor lawyers, and who shall be appointed by the Chief Justice on the advice of the Council of State.<\/p>\n The President shall, in each case, act in accordance with the recommendations of the committee. \u2013\u00a0Article 146<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The President\u2019s assertions are unlikely\u00a0to go down well with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n It views the removal of the Charlotte Osei, as an attempt by the Akufo-Addo government\u00a0to rig the 2020\u00a0elections<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
