<\/p>\nNew Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart,\u00a0J.H Mensah, has died.<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that he died today, Thursday, July 12, 2018, from complications arising from a stroke he suffered in 2017.<\/p>\n
Joseph Henry Mensah had been at the 37 military Hospital for the past 12 months.<\/p>\n
He was 89 years old.<\/p>\n

Born\u00a0October 30, 1928, J.H. Mensah\u2019s political\u00a0life saw him serve as Finance Minister under Kofi Busia\u2019s Progress Party (PP) administration from 1969 to 1972, which was cut short by\u00a0Ignatius Kutu Acheampong\u2019s coup.<\/p>\n
He was also the Senior Minister under President John Kufuor decades later in 2001.<\/p>\n
J.H. Mensah\u2019s life in politics began in 1953, when he worked\u00a0as an assistant inspector of taxes.<\/p>\n
In 1958, he joined the\u00a0United Nations\u00a0Secretariat at the Centre for Development Planning, Projections and Policies.<\/p>\n
He returned to Ghana in 1961 to Head the National Planning Commission at age 34.<\/p>\n
Under his leadership, the National Planning Commission drew up and implemented the Seven-Year Development Plan from 1962 to 1969.<\/p>\n
In 1969, he was elected to Parliament and became the Minister of Finance until 1972.<\/sup><\/p>\n After\u00a0Acheampong\u2019s 1972 coup,\u00a0J.H. Mensah was imprisoned under the\u00a0National Redemption Council (NRC) in 1975.<\/p>\n He was later forced into exile in the early 1980s but still headed a group opposed to the\u00a0Provisional National Defence Council\u00a0(PNDC) led by\u00a0Flt. Lt.\u00a0Jerry John Rawlings.<\/p>\n After Ghana entered its Fourth Republic, in 1992, he served on the\u00a0African Advisory Council of the\u00a0African Development Bank\u00a0from 1993 to 1997.<\/p>\n In December 1996, J.H. Mensah successfully contested for a parliamentary seat in\u00a0Sunyani East\u00a0District on the ticket of the NPP and served as the Minority Leader in Parliament.<\/p>\n He was re-elected in 2000, when the NPP assumed the mantle of governance after over\u00a0three decades in opposition.<\/sup><\/p>\n He never saw himself as having retired from politics although he has not been active in it, because for him, \u201cOnce a servant, always a servant\u201d, he once said.<\/p>\n \u2013<\/p>\n Source: Citinewsroom.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart,\u00a0J.H Mensah, has died.
