President Nana Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his belief in the integrity Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, to prosecute corrupt officials in the previous Government.

According to the President, attempts by individuals to prevent the President from investigating corrupt officials will not hold.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, speaking at a graduation parade at the Ghana prisons service, said the Mr. Amidu is committed to ensuring all forms of corruption are investigated.

“To those who are sending chiefs and men of God to the Special Prosecutor to intervene on their behalf, to try to dissuade Mr. Martin Amidu from conducting his investigations, from the little I know of the man, they are engaged in a fruitless venture.”

Earlier this week, Mr. Amidu, revealed he had reported the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central constituency, Mahama Ayariga to the Economic and Organized Crime Organization (EOCO) for attempting to block his investigations into his conduct.

Mr. Amidu in a statement sighted by citinewsroom.com indicated that Mahama Ayariga had sent personal friends, former colleagues, chiefs, pastors among others, to beg him [Amidu] to stop the investigations against him [Ayariga].

Mr. Amidu, who said he was investigating Ayariga on suspicion of commission of corruption and abusing his office by importing three used Toyota Land Cruiser V8s into the country, added that Mr. Ayariga refused to honor an invitation by EOCO over the matter.

The President, however, assured the public that government has put in place measures to ensure there are significant improvements in the prisons service.

Infrastructure development for Prisons

President Akufo-Addo, however, admitted that though the current pace of infrastructure development for the prisons service has stalled, plans are far advanced to get the contractors back on site to complete all uncompleted projects.

Among such projects include; a 2,000 capacity remand Prison at Nsawam and the expansion of a residential facility at the Ankaful maximum security prisons staff.

“I want to assure the Prisons service even though the projects have stalled, the government will get the contracts on site very soon so that these projects are completed and operationalized,” The President said.
