A virologist at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) has said that coronavirus does not mutate but follows an exponential order.

According to Dr. Michael Owusu of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), “if you follow the trajectory it follows an exponential order. This is not peculiar to Ghana, if you look through the Africa CVC dashboard it took close to 98 days for Africa to get to about 100,000 cases but then it is taking close to about 20 days for them to get to 200,000 cases”.

He stressed “Our cases is more of a chronic case, the death in the whole of Africa is moving up much faster than what we use to know before. So, what it means is that it is possible we are getting to a point where the cases are increasing; I mean most of the assytomatic base has been built.

“So, Assytomatic has beginning to knock out the people who are at their homes and are vulnerable; and these are the people who have been reporting to the facilities.”

“I mean when we started from March 12, March 13, 14th, most of the cases we have seen before most of them are assytomtaic. It is now that the vulnerable are beginning to have the feel because it is moving into the communities, into the households which is the picture now”, said Dr. Owusu on an Accra-based radio station monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

He pointed out that “I think that within the first week of June and almost today [12 June 2020] it looks like the daily cases has been increasing compared to the previous month; as I said the cumulative numbers should not scare us but then the number of new cases that are added on is something we need to look at it closely and begin to put some measures to contain the spread.

“I’m sure that if you look closely at the data, there are particularly places where these cases are predominately occurring and the earlier, we close those hotspots, I think that it will be very useful for all of us”
