Member of Parliament(MP) for the Bimbilla Constituency and Minister of Defence, Dominic Aduna Bingab Nitiwul has said the soldiers deployed by the government to the various towns in the country are to augment the efforts by the Ghana Immigration Service to prevent the importation of the deadly COVID-19.

The Minority In Parliament, the NDC and some Civil Society Organizations have condemned moves by the government to intimidate the people of the Volta region ahead of the compilation of a new voters register.

But speaking at the Press Briefing currently ongoing the Defence Minister said the troops are deployed to support the Ghana Immigration Service in the fight against COVID-19.

He noted that there are a number of unapproved routes in the country so it was imperative that the government deploy security persons from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces and the Customs Exercise and Preventive service to augment the Immigration officers work at the border towns.

Dominic Nitiwul indicated that the personnel deployed to these areas have been resourced for three months and that until the borders of the country are open by the President of Ghana.

“The Soldiers are there to prevent people from entering the country through unapproved routes so that no one will bring the disease into the country. Immigration can’t do this alone that is why were have asked the Police, Military, and other security agencies to help.

The Operation Enhance Calm lives will stay across the country for three months because we resourced them for three months so if it’s three months and they need to stay further we will resource them”.

He indicated that there’s been reinforcement not only on land but also on the seas in order to tighten all loose ends and to avoid the importation of the disease.

The Defence Minister answering questions on why the Soldiers are searching homes, he indicated that it is not part of the security’s mandate at the border towns and that he will ask for an investigation into the matter.
