The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, says it is not good for a registrant to spend between 15 to 25 minutes to register for a voter’s identification card in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise.

According to him, the slower pace of the registration process means many people will be disenfranchised in the about five weeks registration exercise.

“Generally, my observations of the registration process is very slow and if this slow process continues then I’m not too sure when the timelines the Electoral Commission have announced can be workable because it is taking a registrant averagely 15 to 20 minutes to register for his or her card that is relative to the registration centers I have toured today”, Sammy Gyamfi told an Accra based radio station.

He emphasized that “and I’m having similar reports from other parts of the country which concludes the same concerns. The Electoral Commission will have to address this issue.”

“I have checked with other colleagues of mine who monitored the process in other regions, and the indications is that the process was also slow in those areas. In some areas, the process didn’t start early due to the malfunction of the DVR equipment that the Electoral Commission is using. In other areas, the batteries of the equipment run out very fast because the batteries are weak”, he lamented.

He however said though it is early days yet, he wants the EC to address this slow pace so many people can register within 10 minutes.

“We are hoping that the pace of the process will be improved so that we can have registrant spending less than 10 minutes as we are told at registration centers, to allow more people to register.”
