The demonstration saw over 100,000 people campaigning against the government particularly for the introduction of high taxes on Ghanaians

Today, 26 years later, Ghanaians are campaigning against President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government over almost the same issues . On May 11, 1995, exactly 26 years ago, the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was one of the icons who led the biggest demonstration Ghana has ever had in its history.

According to a historical report filed by Ghanaweb in 2020, the march included over 100,000 people who joined to campaign against the introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT). Apart from Nana Akufo-Addo, other key players were Dr Charles Wreko Brobbey, Kwasi Pratt Jnr, Dr Nayarko Tamakloe, Abdul Malik Kwaku Baako, Akoto Ampaw, Victor Newman, Kwaku Opoku and Napoleon Abdulai.

Interestingly, on May 9, 2021, the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was protested against by the biggest virtual demonstration ever held in Ghana. Thousands of Ghanaians posted pictures that showed the deplorable state of affairs in different parts of the country, asking the government to fix all the problems

Strikingly similar to the Kumi Preko Demonstration, the FixTheCountry movement is also seeking redress to harsh tax rates among others such as high fuel prices, low standard of living, poor educational structures, among others
