Recently, the Minister of Information and Culture in Nigeria stated that the recommended conditions for lifting the Twitter ban in Nigeria will be applicable to all other social media platforms in the country. Recall that during the Independence Day celebration, President Buhari had promised that the Twitter ban will be lifted after some undisclosed conditions are met.

While one might be wondering why the recommendations for lifting Twitter ban will be applied to other social media platforms since they are not banned like the micro-blogging platform, it can however be concluded that the Nigerian government is set to regulate the use of social media platforms in the country.

The reason for this is not brought from afar. President Buhari in his Independence Day speech had noted that the use of social media has been abused by Nigerians. The president noted that some Nigerian users use the platform to propagate fake news and promote ethnic and religious sentiments.

In order to address this misuse of social media, the Nigerian government is set to introduce the conditions for Twitter use to other social media platforms as revealed by Lai Mohammed.
