The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is urging everybody to be extra vigilant as it seizes 270 cartons of Charmé sparkling non-alcoholic white and red grape juice, found to have expired, from market shelves.

This was done jointly with the Ghana Police Service. A press release signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FDA, Delese Mimi Darko, said the distributor of the expired non-alcoholic juice has been arrested to assist investigations.

It cautioned the public to avoid buying and consuming the said Charmé red and white grape juice because the Food and Drugs Authority could not guarantee their quality and safety.

The label on the Charmé sparkling non-alcoholic red grape juice shows that the product expired on October 25, 2021. That of the sparkling non-alcoholic white grape juice expired on August 6, 2021.

These were detected by a vigilant consumer who gave a tip off to the FDA, which moved quickly into action together with the police, to seize the expired products.

The release said the FDA was going to continue retrieving any of these juice products found on shelves during its market surveillance activities.

The FDA called for retailers and persons in possession of the expired Charmé sparkling non-alcoholic red and white grape juice to return them immediately to any of the offices of the food and drugs authority across the country.

The release asked the public to be on high alert, especially as the festive season of Christmas draws closer, to make sure that products they buy are of good quality and are within the best before expiry dates.

This comes in the heels of the recent recall of batches of Ceres juice from market shelves as a result of the information that the product had high levels of mycotoxin-patulin – moulds often found in rotting apples, various fruits, grains and other foods, which the regulators saw was above the acceptable level.

Pioneer Foods, the food and beverage manufacturer, also recalled the product in Kenya and other countries for safety concerns.
