The Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament, Right Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has said during his first sitting in the House after his return from his unavailable leave to the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) for medical reasons, that his outfit would succumb to any pressure from government to act against the best interest of the good people of Ghana.
Presiding over the proceedings in the house this evening, Hon. Alban Bagbin, as popularly called, indicated that it would be a grave mistake for anyone to think that the Parliament House under his headship will be weak one which would be tossed to and fro. He said that anyone who thinks in that direction is completely lost and should return back to the right direction.
“I want to serve notice that I [Alban Bagbin] will not do anything whatsoever to obstruct government’s projects and policies. However, I also want to serve notice that I will not under circumstance be an errand boy for the Executive arm of government in carrying out policies that are out of interest to the people of Ghana,” Right Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin told the house.
“The Parliament House headed by my good self would not be a weak house. We shall conduct ourselves in ways and manners that are in accordance to the laws of this country and we would dutifully execute our mandate as the law makers and representatives of our constituents. I want to reiterate that my outfit would not be a weak one,” he added.
Among other things, Right Hon. Alban Bagbin said that the step taken by the first Deputy Speaker, Hon Joseph Owusu Osei also known as Joe Wise, to overturn his ruling on the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy whilst he went for an unavoidable medical trip, and his subsequent involvement in the voting process to approve the rejected budget constitutes procedural misconduct.
