The Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has said he does not use government fuel aside from official duties.

Speaking to Citi News, he said, “I don’t even buy fuel except when I am doing official duties like coming to the office.”

“Outside this ministry’s work, I don’t use government vehicles,” the minister added.

Mr. Nitiwul explained that ministers of defence normally refuel at certain army bases.

Speaking amid calls for cutbacks from the government as Ghana looks to the International Monetary Fund for support, the minister also said he expects non-essential expenditures by the state to cease.

“On a personal level, I don’t expect the government to be paying my utilities any longer or even buying fuel for me.”

He, however, did not agree with calls for the government to cut down on appointees.

“Generally, how much is a Minister paid vis a vis their duties that you think that the failure to reduce the Ministers is the reason Ghanaians are suffering?” he asked.
