Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the leader of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), gave assurances to the people during a campaign tour of the Eastern Region that the unpredictable power supply, referred to locally as “dumsor,” would soon come to an end.
On Monday, April 29, 2024, Vice-President Bawumia spoke to the clergy and imams in Akropong. He expressed confidence in the government’s efforts to resolve the matter.
“I know there are challenges, and I do not want to paper over economic challenges,” Dr. Bawumia said, acknowledging the difficulties the country faces. We are going to put them to use. Currently, we have issues with power, but I say that from the information I have received from the minister for energy, those power challenges will very soon, and I mean very soon, be a thing of the past.”
Dr. Bawumia has assured people, but despite her words, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has come under increasing fire from different sources. Businesses, groups, and individuals have lambasted the state power distributor for the recent erratic power supply.
The latest to voice their discontent is the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), which has called on the ECG to provide a load-shedding timetable to guide their operations.
As a result, consumers are even more irate with the ECG because it continues to insist that a load-shedding schedule is not necessary given the current situation. As Ghana awaits relief from the ‘dumsor’ crisis, the government faces increasing pressure to deliver on its promise of a swift resolution.
