Due to a power outage, Ghana’s Electoral Commission has announced that generators have been obtained to ensure a seamless limited voter registration drive across the country on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
On Monday, May 6, 2024, Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, spoke about these plans at a press conference.
The EC, in her words, is doing everything within its power to avoid any disruptions brought on by power outages, or “dumsor.”
She went on to say that the commission had made arrangements for all district offices to rent generators, which would come into play in the event of a power outage and guarantee ongoing voter registration services.
The EC has clarified that, in the event of unanticipated events, its offices will transition to a “offline” mode, where voters will be manually registered and their information will be kept on a pen drive.
“We have made plans and are working very hard to make sure that dumsor will not present any problems for us. We have rented generators for each of our district offices so that they can start up in the event of a dumsor.
“In the event of an unforeseen circumstance, we will, nevertheless, switch to an offline mode. This entails registering voters and transferring their personal information to a pen drive, which will be duplicated in our offices upon the return of light. This ensures that the registration process remains uninterrupted.”
Approximately 623,000 first-time voters nationwide are to be registered during the next limited voter registration drive.
In order to accommodate individuals who might find it difficult to visit the district offices, registration will also be held at 785 additional centres in addition to the commission’s 258 district offices.
Additionally, 25 public universities have been added as locations for registration.
