The Ministry of Inner Cities and Zongo Development has said the disbursement of monies from the Zongo Development Fund will commence by close of next month.

The Ministry said the board for the Development Fund has been inaugurated, and series of training programmes for the board members are currently underway.

The Zongo Development Fund was established as part of President Akufo-Addo’s commitment of fulfilling his promise to assist Muslim communities across the country.

But speaking to the media during a tour of the Madina zongo community, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid; sector minister, said his outfit is completing all the underground works for the board to begin its official duties.

“The law has been passed now, the board has been named, but there are series of steps that you need to take the board members through as well as the processes for them to become fully functional. For example, we have to do training for the board members in the public and management financial act and corporate governance, and all of those things that will imbue them with the right qualities to be able to administer the fund according to the law.”

Dr. Hamid further mentioned that the work of the board will officially begin next month.

“When I came in, the Minister had already started with the process and by 11th to 13 of September we will able to complete these training projects. So hopefully by close of September, I believe they will be ready to begin the process of administering the fund.”

Zongo Development Fund secretariat to be ready in July – Minister

Former Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, Boniface Abubakar Saddique, had hinted earlier that inhabitants of Zongos and inner cities were to start benefiting from the Zongo Development Fund by July 2018.

Parliament passes Zongo Development Fund Bill

The Bill seeks to establish a Fund to speed up the development of Zongo communities into centres of opportunity.

Government explained that Zongo communities in the country have over the years been bedeviled with infrastructure deficits, lack of social services and poor sanitation.
