A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Legal Team, Abraham Amaliba, has said former President Mahama’s comeback poses a threat to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NPP through its acting Director of Communications, Yaw Adomako Barfi, has said they are not moved by the decision of the former President to contest the upcoming NDC presidential primaries and subsequently vie for the presidency.

But speaking on Breakfast Daily, Mr. Amaliba said a Mahama-led NDC will send NPP into the opposition in 2020.

“It bothers them. Listen to the ordinary Ghanaian, what they say is that, Mahama’s time was better, the comparisons are being made. What will make this election interesting is to compare Nana’s four years to Mahama’s four years of governance. I know Mahama has already won, Mahama’s time was better,” he said.

Speaking on the same show, a communication team member of the governing NPP, Eric Twum, said former president Mahama’s comeback has been disapproved by his own party members.

John Mahama last Thursday[August 23] officially declared his intention to contest in the party’s presidential primaries.

This is despite the fact that he led the party to one of its worse election performances in 2016 while an incumbent president.

Mahama’s decision, although anticipated, has left some party supporters surprised as they believe Mahama needed not after the humiliating defeat.

Others have however declared their support for John Mahama and welcomed his decision, indicating that he is the best among the about 11 flagbearer hopefuls to make a significant impression and possibly claim victory in the 2020 elections.
