The recent banter between former President John Dramani Mahama and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a foretaste of what Ghanaians should expect as the country inches closer into another electioneering period.

The former President weeks ago, announced his comeback to lead the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) promising to right all the wrongs admitting in some cases that campaign funds did not actually get to the rightful persons.

He kick-started his campaign tour of the Central Region last week and as always expected criticized certain policy decisions of the government including the double-track system and the recently implemented free SHS.

Mr Mahama during his 4-day tour observed that the free SHS is an ill-planned policy the reason it is bedeviled with overcrowding among other challenges indicating the ruling party is impervious advice.

“Our NPP friends, they don’t listen to advice, they think they know everything. We shall come together and decide on the proper implementation of Free SHS,” he said.

But President Akufo-Addo in a sharp rebuttal in faraway USA where he was attending the UN General Assembly meeting, warned against giving Mahama the opportunity to revise the free SHS policy as proposed.

He stated “ I am alarmed by this concept of a review. This is because anytime our political opponents try anything of this sort, it leads the policy in question into a coma. We all remember the NHIS one-term premium payment review pledge. Not only did the review not materialize, but they also succeeded in degrading the policy,” the President bemoaned.

He continued, “I honestly suspect reviewing the Free SHS policy means collapsing it. But, I doubt the Ghanaian people will allow this brilliant policy to be collapsed by anyone.”
