A former Minister of Defence and former Member of Parliament for Lawra-Nandom, Benjamin Kumbuor, has admonished the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to strategically position itself as a party with better alternatives to resolving the problems confronting Ghana.

According to the former legislator, the NDC should not just make up the numbers but rather propose ideas to remedy issues affecting many sectors of the country.

He gave the advice at an open forum on Saturday on the theme “Securing the Future of the NDC”.

The forum saw some big wigs of the party like Goosie Tanoh, Fritz Baffour and Ebi Bright, amongst others deliberating on issues affecting the fortunes of the party.

Addressing participants, Mr. Kumbuor admonished the party to be focused to capture power in the next election.

He said Ghana has seen the likes of the New Patriotic Party, “a conservative property-owning democratic party running social projects like free education and the Metro-Mass transport.”

“This brings us to the political crossroads and that is where NDC has to make itself not just another political party but an alternative political party with an alternative vision for this country.”

He added that a lot of people are still strong members of the party because they still believe in the vision of the party and are hopeful that it can be fulfilled.

“The only reason we are still interested [in supporting the NDC] is that we know the NDC has a vision of being a credible, progressive and alternative political force in this country.”

Also at the event, Ebi Bright, a former NDC parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, urged party members to put the party’s vision above personal interests.

“Our party needs to be the common denominator so let’s tell that to the people holding old grudges,” she stressed.

According to her, this was a lesson the NDC could learn from NPP members.

“One of the few things that I envy about the NPP [members] is their loyalty to their [party] direction. They don’t make it about the individuals. They don’t have to like me. They are looking for what I bring to the table for the advancement of the common good.”
