A pandemonium broke out on Monday night at the Kumasi girls senior high school, following a communiqué from the education hierarchy to disallow final year students from moving out, but rather spend the midterm break on campus. The students, who were unhappy after hearing the directive reacted violently, prompting the school authorities to call for assistance from the security personnels to arrive and calm the situation. According to recent reports, the personnels were made up of joint military and police team and their intervention resulted in some brutalities which saw several students inflicted with body injuries. The decision to restrain the final year students from leaving campus was instigated, after a suggestion from the Director general of the Ghana Health Service, Patrick Kumah Aboagye, to do so to prevent a potential spread of the Covid-19 virus. With the increased speculations about the Covid-19 variants making inroads in the country, it became prudent for the management to take such decision to ensure the student’s safety.
The news has received mix reactions from Ghanaians and while some were of the view that, the students were being recalcitrant, others opined the security personnels were high-handed and suppose to have deployed less harmful approach since they were females. The school authorities is yet to speak about the matter, however we are still trying to reach out to them and get version of the story.
