Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah has highlighted the need for quicker court processes under Ghana’s justice system.

“The right to a fair trial in a timely manner is neither courtesy nor a favour but a fundamental right,” Justice Anin-Yeboah said at the Ghana Bar Association’s Annual General Conference.

“Protracted delays in the administration of justice impact negatively not only those who access the court, but… everybody who has something to do with the justice system,” he added.

The Chief Justice assured that the judiciary will continue to collaborate with the bar to decongest the courts as part of efforts to make justice delivery more efficient.

“The establishment of more courts in the country will greatly increase the access to justice, as being done currently.”

In addition to more courts, Justice Yeboah said administrative tribunals were also an option to streamline justice delivery.

“The use of administrative tribunals run by seasoned professionals in other jurisdictions will be explored and replicated in Ghana in due course as a way of decongesting the courts.”

Justice Yeboah said it was “regrettable that few administrative tribunals exist in Ghana to complement the efforts of the judiciary as a way of decongesting the courts.”

The Ghana Bar Association is holding its Annual General Conference under the theme: Ensuring an increase in revenue mobilisation through taxation for the purpose of accelerated national development: The role of the lawyer.

Among the other speakers at the event were the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
