Kidney disease leads to a reduction in life expectancy. Most people have two kidneys, but some only have one. Most people know that a major function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine.

The kidneys perform their life-sustaining job of filtering and returning to the bloodstream about 200 quarts of fluid every 24 hours. There are many causes of chronic kidney disease. The kidneys may be affected by diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

When your kidneys are damaged, waste products and fluid can build up in your body. That can cause swelling in your ankles, nausea, weakness, poor sleep, and shortness of breath. Without treatment, the damage can get worse and your kidneys may eventually stop working.

According to WebMD, excessive intake of these 5 things can damage your kidney over time.

1. Alcohol

Regular, heavy alcohol use can also be harmful to your kidneys over time. Both acute and chronic alcohol consumption can compromise kidney function, particularly in conjunction with established liver disease.

2. Painkillers

Taking one or a mix of painkiller medicines daily over a long time may cause chronic kidney problems. Many incidents of acute kidney failure are reported with the prolonged use of painkillers majorly with the use of aspirin, naproxen , ibuprofen.

3. Processed foods.

Processed foods include pizza, instant noodles, and convenience meals designed for the microwave. These foods typically contain high levels of salt, sugar may cause long-term damage to your kidney.

4. Salt

Diets high in sodium increase blood pressure levels. High blood pressure damages the kidneys over time. Eating too much salt can make it harder for your kidneys to remove fluid, which then builds up in your system and increases your blood pressure.

5. Red meat
