Outstanding healthcare workers and health institutions are to be recognized in an award scheme instituted by the Ghana Health Service to motivate others to strive for excellence.

Community members, colleague healthcare workers as well as clients are expected to recommend a candidate for the scheme scheduled to take place annually, starting next year.

The award scheme, which is intended to be highly competitive, will be held every year at the district, regional and national levels.

It will recognize, acknowledge, and appreciate exceptional contributions, achievements, and performance at the various service levels in order to motivate them to do more and inspire others to do same.

It also aims to build a sense of national pride, patriotism and professionalism in public-sector health workers who work in stressful environments, and to encourage them to give off their best to help improve and sustain quality of healthcare in the country.

Director General of the Ghana Health Service Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, during the launch, said the move was instituted as part of broader staff welfare and performance management system.

“As a Service and a country, we owe a debt of appreciation to our gallant health workers who work tirelessly to provide all facets of healthcare services, be they promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative or palliative, to patients on daily basis across the country,” he said.

“For decades, health workers at respective operational levels have shown and continue to show commitment to improving the quality of healthcare delivery in the country. These health workers have been working extremely hard round the clock, breaking their backs in high-stress environments to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to all and performance indicators of the Ghana Health Service improve.”

Chairperson of the awards committee Madam Araba Kudiabor assured the scheme will be guided by transparency, equity, public ownership and sustainability.

“A staff can be nominated by their colleagues, former colleagues, a supervisor, head of the facility, a community member or any other staff who is not a member of the Committee.

“A nominator and one endorser are required for each nomination submitted for eligibility consideration.”

A total of 1,893 awards for individual institutions and staff at various service levels will be awarded next year.
