Consuming contaminated foods can impact your health a great deal. Because of this, purchasing food from vendors with a Food Hygiene Permit is the way to go. This permit is issued by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to food vendors after meeting the requirements stipulated in the FDA Code of Hygienic Practices for Food Service Establishments.

In the month of June, the FDA trained about 95 operators and managers of food service establishments (FSES) on how to maintain good hygienic and catering practices to deal with food safety concerns.

The training program was attended by people from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Mfantsiman, Assin-Fosu, and Komenda-Edina Eguafo-Abirem Municipal and Abura-Asebu-Kwamanese, Assin North and South District Assemblies. According to the Public Health Act, 2012, Act 851, it is illegal for a person to prepare, package, sell, store, or display food for sale in environments that are deemed unhygienic.

The act also bars food service establishments from doing business without the food hygiene permit. Sellers who fail to abide by this law could face punitive actions such as fines or imprisonment.

Madam Francisca Obeng, the acting Regional Head of the Authority, encouraged those who took part in the exercise to always have the health and safety of their customers at heart.

She entreated all FSEs to acquire the Food Hygiene Permit certificates, adding that all food businesses going about their business without the permit were committing an offense.

“All food service establishments already registered with the FDA are to immediately display their certificates,” Madam Obeng added.

The FDA boss also took her time to advise the public to take their health and safety seriously by always looking out for food hygiene permits in the various establishments before buying anything from them.
