More trouble for Bola Ra as some employees of the media corporation are on their third day of strike action at Meridian House, which houses radio stations under the Excellence In Broadcasting Network group.

All EIB Network media houses operate from Meridian House on Accra’s Ring Road, save GHOne TV, which is based in Ridge.

Some 120 EIB Network workers went on strike Monday (July 4, 2022) over unpaid salary.

A staff member who spoke to GraphicOnline on condition of anonymity said her salary has been in arrears for over a year but she knew of other colleagues who were owed 15 months of salary arrears.

On Monday, some of her coworkers stayed home in protest of their plight, according to the worker.

It was also revealed that the staff members who stayed away from the office on Tuesday had their line supervisors write them a letter to explain their absence from the workplace.

The employees, on the other hand, are unwavering in their resolve and plan to keep up their protest until the end of the week, when they hope to hear back from management.

Split among staff

There is no recognized staff union in the EIB group which includes Starr FM, GH One and Kasapa FM and this has led to a split among staff over the decision to strike.

Some staff, especially on-air personalities who are not in favour of the strike are carrying out their normal duties i.e. hosting the morning shows on radio and television while others including reporters are at work but not performing their assigned duties.

Another staff who spoke to GraphicOnline said the on-air personalities were not feeling the pinch because most of them had other “side-gigs and endorsements” which make up for their lack of a salary.

“For the staff who are full-time journalists, things have been very difficult for us because journalism is how we make our daily bread.

“Imagine, working for close to a year and not receiving a salary, how do you explain to someone that you work for a popular media house for close to a year but receive no salary?”.

However, Dorcas Kwao, EIB Network’s HR/Administration Manager, could not be reached for her side of the story following several attempts.
