He was enstooled on 26th April,1999. He is also the Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He is currently 72 years old. Julia Osei Tutu is the name of his wife. Ohemaa Afua Kobe Serwaa Ampem is the only daughter of the king.

Otumfuo has blamed his sub chiefs over illegal mining activities.

He asked them why at least one of them couldn’t consult him or bring to his notice about how the galamsey activity is destroying their water bodies. His demeanour towards his sub chiefs showed anger. He even accused them that, he’s sure that they even take money from the galamsey operators that is why they couldn’t say anything or stop them from operating. Otumfuo made it clear that he is going to investigate into the issue well to find out if some of the chiefs had a hand in the operation.

One may ask if this may bring an end to the galamsey activities in at least the Ashanti Region? We do hope so because Otumfuo Osei Tutu (II) himself wants it to come to a stop.

Below are some reasons why illegal mining or galamsey must stop.

1. It destroys water bodies.

It becomes unsafe for both human and aquatic species. It kills aquatic beings and also becomes harmful for humans to drink due to the chemicals they include in the process such as mercury.

2. It leads to death.

During the process of mining, they dig deep holes which they sometimes don’t cover it up when done. As a result of this, people who are unaware of these holes sometimes fall victims by falling into the holes which eventually cause their death. The miners themselves often die in the hole.

3. Deforestation.

So many trees are cut down without replacement. This at the long run, leads to soil erosion and causes the extinction of some important plant species.

4. Loss of properties.
